C is out of town this week so I asked my two beautiful nieces to step in and take her place. The three of us caught the movie earlier this evening and we all came to the same general conclusion about this couple.

Zoe and Stan certainly have many of the ingredients for a very tasty relationship – they’re both gorgeous, they’re both nice, they both seem genuine enough. Neither of them is into money just for the sake of money; both have careers they are passionate about and which even seem somewhat compatible. He’s into organic, local, sustainable dairy products, and she owns a pet shop.

Oh and did we mention they’re both gorgeous?

Their affair follows a zany and utterly predictable path of meet, fall in love, suffer a mid-relationship crisis and then get back together at the end with all of the precursors for a life lived happily ever after – a new successful store for him, an engagement ring for her, a new baby on the way for them both. There’s no visible reason why we shouldn’t go ahead and give them the full 5 reels but there is one issue that’s bugging us and it’s this – timing. Everything feels very rushed to us and makes us wonder if there is really enough of a foundation there to sustain them. After approximately two dates he’s in love and ready to commit to a lifetime of marriage and fatherhood to twin babies that are not his with a woman he barely knows? Sorry, but doubtful. We question not only his thinking but hers – she may be someone that is afraid to commit but she accepts his presence quite readily into her life and grows dependent on him with alarming speed. Even two teenagers thought it all seemed too good to be true.

There are some signs of trouble to come: anyone can have the occasional slip of the tongue, but we still found the haste with which Stan clarifies to his ex that the babies are not his very telling. We don’t doubt that he is crazy about Zoe but he’s already had two freakouts and we have a pretty strong suspicion there are more waiting just down the road. He’s leapt into a whole new life without looking, and while it seems incredibly romantic we think it might not be long before reality hits him again. Much as we’d love to see them stick it out together, we still think it might be a good idea for her to have, you know, a backup plan.
