This is the best movie we’ve seen in ages – great story, great performances, and best of all – a truly believable couple.

Nic and Jules have been together forever. They met at UCLA when Nic was a medical intern and Jules was a pretty college student with an injury. They fell in love, got married, and had two children together – Jules carried their son Laser; Nic their daughter Joni. Both children share the same donor father, whom they had never met. Until now.

Enter Paul, the sweet and caring although somewhat self-centered, biological father. He runs a successful restaurant and organic produce farm. Needless to say he’s pretty surprised to get a call out of the blue from his teenage son and daughter, expressing their desire to meet him.

In no time Paul’s entry into their lives shakes everything up, making everyone question things they haven’t before. Joni wants more independence from slightly controlling mother Nic. Laser decides maybe he doesn’t really want to hang out with his hoodlum friend after all. Jules, who’s been searching for purpose now that the kids are older, starts her own landscaping business, and Paul hires her to redo his backyard.

Paul and Jules soon find they have things in common and strike up an awkward intimacy. Paul is sympathetic and appreciative, exactly what Jules has been craving, and they fall into a torrid affair. Nic discovers it, the kids find out as well, and it has a predictably devastating effect on everyone involved.

So, despite this why are we so convinced that Nic and Jules are going to make it? Because they have so much to fight for: their history and family, home and the shared life they’ve built together. At no point do we doubt the love between these women. People make mistakes, start to take each other for granted, but they can also recover from those mistakes and become stronger than ever.

The movie ends with Nic and Jules driving home after they’ve taken their daughter to college. Jules reaches for Nic’s hand, and they hold on, and we think that says it all. That no matter what happens, they’ll face it together.
