Not your typical romance movie but there’s a couple in it so we’re going to rate them.

We caught probably one of the last showings of this movie before it leaves the theaters. Doug MacRay is a long-time thief from the streets of Boston, who pulls off a carefully orchestrated bank job with his 3 partners. Before making their getaway the robbers make a last minute decision to take a hostage with them in case they need a bargaining chip with the police. Claire Keesey, the bank’s attractive manager, is blindfolded and stuffed in the back of the van; when they’re sure they’ve gotten away she is driven to the river’s edge and released.

A few days later Doug, concerned that his partner is going to kill Claire just to tie up any loose ends, says he will check in on her. He fakes a chance encounter with her at the neighborhood laundromat; after some chatting he invites her out for a drink. A few days later they go on an official date. It isn’t long before the two have fallen for each other.

Even if Doug wasn’t a rough-around-the-edges thug with a father in jail and a criminal record of his own, we’d have a tough time seeing these two together. Although she is unaware of his real identity we still wonder why calm, quiet Claire would be drawn to someone that, while certainly sexy, is so clearly from the other side of the tracks. (Of course perhaps that’s part of the attraction). Perhaps she herself is from more humble beginnings but she’s done well for herself, and we think that ultimately she will want something more than someone who works at the local rock quarry. And of course once she learns who he actually is there is no chance of them remaining together.

We do believe that he has fallen for her and will regret losing her for the rest of his life. We also believe that she has a strong empathy for him, and will continue to think of him for the rest of her days, perhaps even wondering (as so many women do) if she could have somehow saved him. But deep down we think she’ll know better, and eventually find someone else in another town.
